CD review -
When an artist puts together ideas for a new
CD of cover tunes and song standards, the list quickly becomes
staggering to say the least. Singer Jeffrey Wilgus ran into this very
problem when tackling the task that soon became his most recent album,
Signature. Wilgus started out by asking friends and fans what songs
they would like to hear. When it came down to decision time, he
realized that he would have to have a personal connection to any song
he included in order to perform it. Wilgus tells Out In Jersey that
for each of the twelve tracks on Signature, he has a personal story.
Among his twelve song choices are two written by Boy George, “Summer,
Highland Falls” by Billy Joel and the Stephen Schwartz classic “Corner
of the Sky” from Pippin.
Jeffrey Wilgus best describes his style as a
cross between pop and Broadway. A former teacher of Jeffrey’s once
referred to his music as “Billy Joel meets the cast of Rent.”
Of the two tracks that Jeffrey co-wrote on
Signature is the touching and tender “The Answer in Me” which is
the essence of what Wilgus set out to capture. “These songs are a
journey from love to loss and personal struggle to new beginnings.”
He also said, “I hope that anyone who listens to my music hears the
stories I’m telling and that the messages help them on their own
journey.”
So few artists offer the listener the depth
that Jeffrey Wilgus so effortlessly conveys. His singing has been
compared to the likes of Rob Thomas and Andy Bell. His understanding
and treatment of a song is in this writers opinion, truly in league
with these masters of song.
